Seal of Biliteracy

REQUIREMENTS

The Board of Trustees of the CUSD School District will recognize students who have developed linguistic proficiency and cultural literacy and competency in one or more languages offered within the District curriculum, in addition to English.  The District shall present a Seal of Biliteracy on the transcript and diploma of the graduating senior as an indicator of accomplishment for future employers and for college admissions offices based on a review of student qualifications in accordance with District established criteria.

To be eligible to receive the District's Seal of Biliteracy Award upon graduation, a student shall meet all of the following criteria:
1) Successful completion all requirements for high school diploma, including: 
2)  ENGLISH/LANGUAGE ARTS 
 Successful completion of all English/ Language Arts requirements with an overall GPA of 2.0 or above in grades 9 through first semester grade 12. (Guidance office will attach copy of current transcript) 
3) WORLD LANGUAGE:
     Proficiency in one or more languages, other than English, demonstrated through ONE of the following methods: 
   a.   A score of “3” or above on the Language AP (Advanced Placement exam) or a score of “4” or above on the IB (International Baccalaureate) exam by their junior year for a world language. (Attach copy of test results.) 
   b. Successful completion of the District’s approved four-year course of study in the same world language, receiving an overall GPA of 3.0 or above in those courses with approval signature of current world language teacher. (Attach copy of transcript.)

In addition to the requirements mentioned above, if the primary language of a pupil is other than English, he or she shall meet the following criteria:
1. Demonstrate English proficiency on the English Language Proficiency Assessment for California (ELPAC) by scoring a 3 or a 4
2. Meet all the criteria listed in 1, 2, 3.

So what do you need to do now in order to apply and certify that you have met ALL the English/Language Arts & World languages eligibility criteria necessary to receive the State Seal of Biliteracy??
 
If you are not currently in a World Language course and know you qualify, please pick up an SSB application form the Guidance office. Once you complete your form you will return it to the SSB inbox located in the Guidance office. 
 
Submit the completed SSB application ASAP no later than TBD.
